Let Me Tell You A Story…

If you have a thirst for adventure, we at Lightspeed DMS have an opportunity for you!

Yes, we are hiring – but this is not just an opportunity for a new career, it’s an opportunity for a new you! Sounds a little dramatic, right? I can tell you from experience that life as a Field Technical Trainer is more than just a job – it’s a life-changing, spiritual journey – or at least it was for me.

Let me tell you a story:

In 2017 I applied for the Field Technical Trainer position. I wasn’t entirely sure I would get the position and truthfully, I almost hoped I wouldn’t get the offer. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Applying for a job that you don’t really want?

It wasn’t the work I was concerned about. I was going to be working with some amazing people in the Implementation and Training department at Lightspeed, and the job itself was very attractive. It was the little detail of travel – and more specifically, flying in an airplane that had me in a full-blown panic!

In Late November of that year, I was offered the job. I remember calling my wife with the news. But not in the way you might think. I shared the news that I got a job offer but I was going to quit working at Lightspeed so I didn’t have to accept it.

After she calmed me down and the sweat stopped pouring down my face, I replied to the job offer – Yes, I accepted the job!

One month later, I was on my first flight.

Flying in an airplane, for as long as I can remember, has been an uncomfortable experience for me. It’s true, I really don’t like flying. And yet, for four and a half years, I flew thousands and thousands of miles to hundreds of cities across the United States.

I like the window seat, and I’ve frequently turned down complimentary upgrades to first class to retain my view over the wing. Maybe superstition has something to do with it or maybe I’m a creature of habit. But I like the window seat, over the right wing of the plane.

I’ve spent an untold number of hours flying in the light of yellow sunrises and orange sunsets. I’ve been tossed about the clouds by wind, rain, snow, and as much wrath as Mother Nature felt I could handle.

Those four and a half years forced me to face one of my greatest phobias repeatedly. By comparison, it’s made other challenges I face in life seem small and trivial.

The payoff was that I saw wonderful sites, met incredible people, and did things I never dreamed I’d do. I made the best out of the time I had in every single location. Monuments, museums, mountains, gardens, canyons, churches, statues, restaurants, hotels, prisons, factories, flowers, national parks, lakes, and oceans – I saw and experienced it all!

The journey I took over those 54 months was unforgettable. The people and places I’ve visited have all left their mark on me. This experience has impacted me profoundly, and I like to think I’m wiser and more evolved for it

A couple of last thoughts:

Due to the wonders of modern technologies like Zoom, Bomgar and the phone (to name a few) a good portion of the time a trainer can work remotely with their client from home. During the 54 months I spent as a trainer, I went on location to 76 stores but was able to train roughly 3 times as many, remotely.

However, working in person with the people in the dealership and all the fantastic experiences that come with travel certainly has its perks.

Below is a list of the dealerships and businesses that I went onsite to from January 2018 and May 2022. If you are reading this and happen to work at one of these locations or if you and I had a chance to work together on the Lightspeed software, please drop me a hello!

When I think back on my childhood, some of my fondest memories are the Saturdays I spent with my dad at the local motorcycle shop. There was something special about walking through those doors and being surrounded by all the shiny new bikes on the showroom floor. The atmosphere of the shop was intoxicating, and I knew from a young age that I was hooked. As I got older, my love for the Powersports Industry continued to evolve. I landed a job behind the parts counter of that very same dealership and started my career using Lightspeed. It's hard to believe that was over thirty years ago! Over the years, my role with Lightspeed has changed many times, but the feeling I get when I’m in a dealership or at an industry event, always takes me back to those Saturdays with my dad. There's something truly special about this industry and the people within it, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of it.
